• Run a "background check." You should vet the companies from which you purchase travel services.

• Keep private information private. Never give out your credit card number unless you initiate the transaction and you are confident about the company with which you are doing business.

• Get the facts. You should receive complete details in writing about any trip prior to payment. These details should include the total price; cancellation and change penalties, if any; and specific information about all components of the package.

• Follow up. Once you have the complete details of your trip, contact the hotel and transportation companies on your own to make certain the reservations have been made.

• Know where you stand. If you insist on replying to an e-mail or calling a 900-number in response to a travel solicitation, understand the charges and know the risks.

• Know when to walk away. High-pressure sales presentations that don't allow you time to evaluate the offer, or which require that you disclose your income are red flags to be heeded.

• Protect yourself. Always pay with a credit card if possible. Even legitimate companies can go out of business. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, credit card customers have the right to refuse paying for charges for services not rendered.

Be prepared for a three-day of oversized water guns and buckets of the blue stuff as Songkran hoses down the hottest month of the year with country-wide water fights. According to tradition, the water symbolizes cleansing, however, these days it looks like its more of an excuse to get elephants to spray unsuspecting onlookers.

Phuket Vegetarian Festival, Phuket, Thailand happens during September. Organizers of this event took to self-mortification to liven things up when they realized how boring a vegetarian festival was. Warning Tourists To Be Fined For Wearing Bikinis

This summer, authorities in Majorca have vowed to fine tourists who leave the beach dressed only in bikinis or speedos.

Palma City Council has declared that it will issue fines of up to £500 ($A998) to holiday makers who take to the streets dressed in nothing but beachwear as part of a Good Citizen Plan.

Despite the fact that the fines may come as a shock to tourists, restaurant and bar owners appear to be fed up with having to serve underdressed clientele.

According to the residents, although the council’s threat is one they have heard before, a crackdown may actually take place this year. Anna Nicholas, a blogger for the Telegraph said:

“This time it seems there’s less saber-rattling and a more earnest intention to get serious with offenders of all kinds – holidaymakers, expats and locals alike.

“Visitors breezing around the streets in beachwear away from seaside resorts will be given instant fines and advised to cover up especially before entering bars and restaurants.

“When it comes to partying, especially in resorts close to Palma such as Arenal and Can Pastilla, there will be no tolerance shown to groups of young tourists that regularly congregate on Playa de Palma beach concocting noxious alcoholic brews that they consume through straws from large plastic buckets,” she added.

“Steep fines will be issued by local police as a deterrent while illegal vendors will also be penalised.”

After the two years of discussions, at the end of May, the civic laws are expected to be approved and introduced the new law.

According to the Daily Mail, under a section titled 'Etiquette', the Ordenanza states anyone 'devoid of superior parts of clothing' in roads not immediately adjacent to the beach will be fined.

Alvaro Gijon, the mayor of Palma, said that the aim of the new laws was to regulate good behaviour for tourists and residents with the aim of preserving 'harmony and civility', the newspaper reported.

Terrorist Bashir 'Wants to Disrupt Polls'

April 7 AAP - According to a media report, Radical cleric Abu Bakar Bashir has called for his supporters to disrupt this week's Indonesian legislative elections.

Indonesian police is watchful after Bali bombing mastermind Abu Bakar Bashir encouraged supporters to interrupt this week's Indonesian legislative elections.

The convicted terrorist has asked supporters not to be "unproductive" and to create disorder Wednesday's nationwide ballot.

A warning has been sent by Indonesia's anti-terror forces that a terrorist network could be planning an attack, said Police Lieutenant Colonel Adi Deriyan Jayamarta told Indonesia's Kompas news website police.

An oreder was imposed by the police chief, based in Malang, East Java, that officers has to stay in communication with religious leaders and approach any suspicious object with care, especially near polling stations.

"There's expert personnel who will handle it," he said on Monday.

"Don't think that you have some kind of `blast-free magic' and handle it yourself."
According to Lt Col Adi, Detachment 88, Indonesia's counter-terror squad, had information from a terror suspect involved with a network "that has done military training for firearm and bomb usage".

Noting the elections, Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade updated its travel advice for Indonesia last week.

"Australians are advised to avoid all protests, demonstrations and political rallies, as they can turn violent with little notice," a spokesman said.

"The department keeps the travel advice for Indonesia under close review and updates it as required."

The founder of Jemaah Islamiah (JI), Bashir, is serving 15 years in Nusa Kambangan.   Nusa Kambangan is a high-security jail off the coast of central Java dubbed the Alcatraz of Indonesia.

Over the 2002 Bali bombings, Bashir was acquitted, but was jailed over his role in setting up a terror cell in Aceh.

AAP Bashir was still giving orders from behind bars, albeit to a group with a different name, but the same radical ideology as JI, says the Indonesia's counterterrorism agency chief in 2012.

The bombing of two Kuta nightclubs in 2002 killed 202 people, including 88 Australians.

Three million cars, nine million motorbikes and inadequate public transport. Experts predict that in 2014 the whole traffic in the city will collapse. During rush hour the average speed in the inner city is around 10 km/h and if you’re lucky, it will only take you three hours to get to work. The average citizen of Jakarta has his breakfast in the car on their way to work.

Yes the traffic in Jakarta is full on and you need superhuman patience and nerves of steel to survive it. But it can also have positive effects. During rush hour there needs to be at least three people in the car otherwise drivers get fined, and a lot of Indonesian mothers who normally would have trouble finding employment have taken this fact and used it to their advantage. They offer their presence to wealthy businessmen and sitting in their car with them during these peak hours to help them avoid the fine in exchange for some income. Genius.

My CouchSurfing host lived somewhere in the middle of the city in a typically tall building. I explored its rooftop which overlooked the surrounding areas and on the horizon was a beautiful view of Jakarta’s skyline. It was around 7 p.m. when the sun was going to rest, when the call to prayer occurred. It was such a unique experience in this city. You could hear it from many mosques all over the city. It is hard to explain what I felt at that moment, but it really left an impression.

No opinion in Jakarta is more divided than those about the Stadium. Some people love it, and others hate it. You hear many, many stories about it and it’s up to you whether you believe them or not. One thing is for sure, whenever you ask about Jakarta’s nightlife someone will mention the Stadium.

What is this place though and why is it so popular? Well, one thing that is heavily associated with it are drugs. Sure, you will find drugs in any night club in the world but at the Stadium it seems to be a continuous issue due to the fact that because most Indonesians don’t drink alcohol due to their religious beliefs, they might substitute it with a pill instead.

True or not, most of world’s top DJ’s have performed or will most likely perform at Stadium at some point in their careers. It is a great place with awesome acts and a great audience. Otherwise people wouldn’t talk about it. I reckon it is a must see and if you like good techno, then the Stadium is definitely worth checking out.


You can experience Indonesia in just one day in Jakarta

How can I see a whole country in a day by just staying in Jakarta, that doesn’t make sense. Yes that’s what I thought too. My local friends took me to a park called Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, which essentially translates to “Beautiful Indonesia Miniature Park”. The park was opened in 1975 and unfortunately doesn’t really look well maintained. The lizard house especially looked a bit sad and I felt sorry for the animals. But once you’re there you get the chance to pat a Komodo dragon, even though it probably hasn’t moved since 1975.

But it’s still a great way to get to know the local culture of each province in Indonesia. You get to learn about local habits, look at different architecture, clothing, food and many more aspects of Indonesia’s culture. There is a big lake in the middle of the park with a little island in the shape of the country. If you have the guts to take the cable car you can enjoy a stunning view of it from above.

Indonesians will make you feel like a star

First of all, Indonesians are super hospitable people and they are very friendly towards foreigners. But there aren’t as many foreign tourists in Jakarta as you might think. You will get a lot of attention and the locals will genuinely be very keen to get to know you. That’s in fact amazing to me. In Thailand a lot of the locals seem to get easily bemused and simultaneously annoyed by the mass tourists, and this won’t be the case in Indonesia.

The most surprising thing was the local CouchSurfing scene though. I’d received about a hundred various emails offering help, recommendations and hosting offers. I was blown away by the kindness of those people so I decided to meet as many as I could. We organized a big CouchSurfing meeting and many local Indonesian travelers attended. Their enthusiasm was unbelievable and I made a lot of friends that day. Even a crew from Metro TV came and filmed a little documentary for the national channel about CouchSurfing.

Thai Protesters Plan to Shutdown Bangkok

ANTI-GOVERNMENT demonstrators are planning to overwhelm major intersections of Thailand's congested capital in what they claim is an attempt to shut down Bangkok.

This plan was feared to create violence that may set off a military coup.

The protesters are doing everything to make caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to resign.  They wanted her government changed by a non-elected interim administration to execute reforms they clam are required to put an end to corruption and money politics.

In February 2, they desire to rush a premature general election called by Yingluck.

Ever since November, the demonstrators were involved in street battles with police; they also cut off water and electricity to police headquarters and there was a time when they occupied the compounds of other government agencies.

Counting a policeman, at least eight people have died in violence connected with the political turbulence.

The protest leaders said last week that the demonstrators would occupy seven key intersections on Monday in Bangkok, a teeming city known for its debilitating traffic jams.

They are also menacing to invade government office compounds.

Late on Sunday of, groups of demonstrators begun arriving at some of the venues, where they said they would erect stages.

Earlier on Sunday, some demonstrators blocked a road in Bangkok's northern outskirts, where many government offices are located, said Deputy Police Spokesman Colonel Anucha Romyanan.

There were no instant confrontations with the authorities, who have guaranteed to demonstrate command in order to avoid violence.

Deputy Prime Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul said on Friday that a combined force of around 12,000 police officers and 8000 soldiers was being deployed to maintain order in the capital.

Protest leaders have said they will maintain their "shutdown" of Bangkok for weeks, or until they obtain their goal.

Their latest demonstrations have drawn up to 150,000-200,000 people at their height.
Worry about a coup is elevated since the army's history of intervening in politics.

Army commander General Prayuth Chan-ocha has turned down to rule out the possibility of a military conquest.

Another deputy prime minister, Pongthep Thepkanjana, said on Friday that be believed the army had learned a lesson from the 2006 coup - which ended up polarising Thailand rather than pacifying it - and that the international community and many Thais would be opposed to a military takeover.

According to the report, high inflation is not coming in the way of holiday spends as more and more travelers are booking longer and expensive holiday packages this winter compared with last year.

"The average holiday budgets per person per night have increased to Rs 2,325 this winter from Rs 1,564 in 2012, indicating a 48 per cent rise.

"Trips have become longer by 36.3 per cent with travelers taking an average trip of 3.8 nights this year," says holiday information portal HolidayIQ.com's report 'Insights: Winter Holidays Prediction Report 2013'.

In the middle of November 2013 and January 2014, it analyses the patterns.

People are preparing trips in smaller groups with group size decreasing 16 per cent even though not being thrifty on the budget.

Beach and hill station destinations are most popular this winter, accounting for almost 78 per cent of the holidays planned, according to the report.

Families form a significant part of tourist traffic because of the winter holidays in schools.   This is 26 per cent of planned trips.

The report says traditionally, travelers prefer to travel within the region they reside in. However, this winter there is a marked increase in travelers choosing holiday destinations outside their region.

In the previous year merely forty one per cent of winter trips were intended outside the traveler’s region of residence whereas in the current year the said trips account for sixty six per cent of all trips planned.

People from east and north-east travel outside more while majority of south Indian travelers have a preference travelling within the region.

Couple travelers plan longer and more expensive holidays allocating the highest average budget of Rs 2,611 per person per night, followed by family travelers at Rs 2,137, group travelers at Rs 1,974 and single travelers at Rs 1,693, it said.

Holidays planned by women have 8 per cent higher budgets than those planned by men, it added.
